Synopsis

Anat Cohen

Clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Reviewing one of Anat’s headlining sets with her quartet at the North See Jazz Festival, DownBeat said: “Cohen not only proved to be a woodwind revelation of dark tones and delicious lyricism, but also a dynamic bandleader who danced and shouted out encouragement to her group – whooping it up when pianist Jason Lindner followed her clarinet trills on a Latin-flavored number. . . With her dark, curly, shoulder-length hair swaying to the beat as she danced, she was a picture of joy.”

Marcello Gonçalves

Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Marcello Gonçalves is one of the most celebrated 7-string guitar players in Brazil. His style brings together the spontaneity and mischief of popular music with the sonority and finish of classical music. Marcello has been active as a 7-string guitarist, arranger and musical director of various artists among them are the Trio Madeira Brasil, Ney Matogrosso and Elza Soares. Marcello was the musical director of Brasileirinho – an important documentary film about choro and most recently, the musical director and arranger for Portuguese singer António Zambujo for his Grammy nominated platinum album Até Pensei que Fosse Minha. Marcello created the first academic course for brazilian 7-string guitar, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he is currently teaching.
