Chico Freeman - Saxophone

Heiri Känzig – Upright Bass

Synopsis:

The melodies, which can be sucked out of the silence, fly to the two men almost by themselves. Avant-garde veteran Chico Freeman, a dedicated and passionate improviser, and Swiss high-end bassist Heiri Känzig, a man of strong grooves and a pronounced melodious fanatic, perform their introspective gait as advocates of a musical doctrine that less is mostly more, plenty of air and intimate interaction fill the musical space.

Freeman, who emerged from the once-turbulent and ground-breaking AACM music collective in Chicago, and became the cult saxophonist of the 1980s alongside the likes of Jack DeJohnette, Elvin Jones, and his father Von Freeman, is now more of a gentleman and filled tones, a man who also blows soap bubbles from his tenor saxophone and can play so soulfully that you can hear a tear fall in the rain. One of his tracks on the duo CD "The Arrival" (Intakt Records), which has the congenial team in its luggage, is "To Hear a Tear Drop in the Rain".

Heiri Känzig, a man of strong grooves and with a penchant for everything melodic, who also became known among others in the quartet of Art Farmer or alongside Charlie Mariano and Kenny Wheeler, is one of the most complete European bassists, who can make his instrument sing on occasion.

Chico Freeman and Heiri Känzig consistently put their faith in musical economics. A credo to the understatement, presented by a duo in which the question of avant-garde and tradition is lifted.
