Synopsis:
Padma Sri Pandit M. Venkatesh Kumar is a Hindustani classical vocalist, renowned for his vibrant singing style. He likes to be referred to as Professor Venkatesh Kumar, because it points back to his teaching days at the University College of Music, Dharwad. This gave him stability at that time, when he was not known outside his home state and concerts did not come pouring in as they do now.
He was taken to Veereshwara Punyasharama in Gadag when he was 12 years old, where he spent the next 12 years of his life learning music under the revered Veerashaiva saint and Puttaraja Gawai. The impact of Prof Kumar's music has much to do with the crystal clarity of his enunciation. Every word shines with sound and meaning as he delineates the asthai and Antara of a composition, giving special weightage occasionally, to a particular word to underline its significance. In addition to receiving the Padma Sri Award in 2016, he has been honoured with multiple awards for his work and contribution in the field of music.
